What do media stories of reproductive technologies reveal about contemporary meanings of the family and kinship?
1. Describe media coverage that focuses on the social effects of a reproductive technology in North America or another cultural context. Use a case, issue or news story that has been presented in the media in the last five years.
It is necessary to track down several media sources on the same topic in the same cultural context so that you can compare the coverage. There are no prescribed maximums or minimums of media pieces. Advertisements are acceptable. You must include sufficient sources to provide compelling evidence for your argument.
Suitable assisted reproductive technologies and related social issues include (but are not limited to): prenatal genetic testing, genetic screening, banking of biological materials (sperm, ova, embryo), in vitro fertilization (IVF), pre-implantation diagnosis, paid or altruistic surrogacy, reproductive tourism, ova or sperm donation, ova or sperm selling/buying.
2. Analyze the controversy for what it demonstrates about kinship in that context. For this, you must apply concepts from course materials.
You must also locate and use three additional anthropological articles (from outside course materials) to analyze the coverage.
