Home Sweet Home is a short animated film that was developed by Pierre Clenet, Romain Mazevet, Alejandro Diaz and Stephane Paccolat in the year 2013 (Munday, 2017). The animation film is produced by the Supinfocom Arles animation production company in France. The film is ten minutes long that creates stunning visual styles while sentimentally narrating to the audience. The film has well-rounded characters, and the storyline also has some touching moments. This film is worth a watch as it indulges the power that a simple animated film has in reflecting individuals’ lives by use of a visionary style in storytelling.
The film is set in a dystopian world where houses are the main characters, and there is dialogue non-existence. The story starts with a characteristic blue house detaching from its initial foundation in the suburban and setting off on an epic journey (Munday, 2017). On the way, it is met by another house that looks older in which they set off the journey together. Another smaller houses also join them. The journey is portrayed as challenging where they have to climb hills, pass through desert and snowy places and are also faced with a tornado. However along the way the older house is overwhelmed and passes away which leaves the other two houses to continue the journey alone.
The element of the road trip, apocalyptic and friendship are combined as the houses slowly travel around the meticulously designed environments. The setting starts with a post-apocalyptic vibrancy which is filled with isolation but as the blue house meets the older one the narrative switches to develop company and care. The characters are animated through different structures and also with different personalities (Joalland, 2015). They also are highly expressive as they show their emotions while faced with different situations. The main purpose of this film was to show the progress in life through an emotional reflection with also the integration of friendship bonds and death.
The themes that are shown in the film include friendship, life and also traveling. The theme of traveling is expounded on the solitude that is embraced that comes with traveling away from home to explore and experience the world. The blue house detaches itself from a decaying abandoned town where it is seen to be escaping demolition as it sets off for the unknown and on the way inspiring others to join in. Along the way, they bond and create friendship and are also faced with adversities and also death is experienced for the older house which evokes emotions among the other remaining characters who eventually progress in their journey which portrays the life theme (Munday, 2017).
Symbolism is shown by the house characters in the suburbs which are the main motivation reason for the blue houses detachment which gives a concept of the housing crisis (Berthe, 2014). The tornado represents the challenges that are experienced in life, and the road trip symbolized the life journey. All these are used well to aid the main theme of life.
The film is recommendable as it is interesting and catchy to its audience with an authentic nature where it shows progress in a life journey. The events are illustrated well as per what they signify, the music and sound are used as special effects that subconsciously impact an emotion to the audience, and the film makes a connection to the human life.
The animated film Home Sweet Home is a short, interesting film that catches the audience with its visual style of narration of life. It includes the theme of friendship, life, and travel with the different characters who bear different personalities. Its best strength is that it is short, authentic and illustrative.
